i absolutely refuse to believe rhodey was exchanged with a skrull at any point until after endgame because you will not take that from them, marvel and also tbh i'm perfectly happy just ignoring that bit of plot.

i like the im1 but hooks up with rhodey instead idea! as a basis if nothing else. rhodey gets the "so as a superhero, i'd have this boyfriend..." talk from tony after the "i am iron man" conference both of which i'm sure would be totally well-received.

how/when do you headcanon they met btw? i'm flexible with that since there's no stated canon beyond they knew each other at mit and their ages are 2 years apart.

Yeah, I put it as after endgame too, but I'm happy to just handwave it away. It's not a plot I'm that fond of.

We'll go with that, then. lol. Tony is not one to keep things under wraps. Maybe pick up right after Rhodey helps bring him home post-abduction/Cave time?

I tend to headcanon they met at MIT and were roommates in Rhodey's last year, when Tony had another year to go, but I'm flexible!

actually let's try a oneshot meme first if you don't mind! i'd like to see how we gel (and, honestly, if it's feasible for my brain to have a lot of threads going on at once). i posted this just now; it's the intimacy meme on bakerstreet. don't mind an already established relationship with them in whatever scenario.

also i forgot to ask, but would that make rhodey like 21-22 when they meet? and tony would've been 19-20? tony's graduated mit by then, but i've headcanoned that he works on his phd there afterward (and abroad later on). he'd have left for studying abroad by the time he's 21 though. with the story about spring break 1987 tony jokes about in im1, i've figured they had to have known each other at least as early as that, but also tony very much could've been making it up, lol. man, i wish we had more concrete canon for them...

Yah, around 21-22. I always headcannoned (when shipping them) that Tony was a whizkid who got in younger, so nothing happened between them until after MIT, but I think the canon ages don't work like that.

Maybe say they're in their last year at MIT proper and Rhodey's headed for the air force and Tony to work on his PHD, and then they possibly hook up or sparks fly or something right before they split up, so when they meet again it will be Loaded. (And would explain why Tony doesn't fall for Pepper if they're both holding torches for each other.)

no need to headcanon tony getting in younger, that's completely canon. :P he began mit in 1984 when he's 14 and got his BS at 17. maybe they're a Very Slow Burn like tony and pepper were? like they keep in touch after mit because tony kinda helped to mentor rhodey on aerospace engineering or something and they became friends ~~because tony was so eager to have actual friends who like him for being a nerd~~ and then his parents die and he's a CEO and rhodey eventually becomes the weapon procurement liasion to stark industries and as the years pass tony is, you know, tony. flirts jokingly with rhodey as he does but surely he doesn't mean anything about it because he's a playboy. surely.

then afghanistan happens and oops

suddenly realizes he's had Feelings all along and wants to try for more

Slow burn is good. We could just pick and choose some Loaded Moments to play out before they finally get together. After Afghanistan Rhodey would probably be hyper protective for a while. Run all the press off for Tony. heh.

i got all the timelines down, no worries, haha. haven't been playing tony for sixteen years for nothing alsdka. actually rewatching IM1 rn because it's been so long since i've watched any of his movies.

slow burn is my jam! i got some ideas for that for sure, if i can handle all of these new threads. the intimacy one could be them on the plane ride back to the states? i've always headcanoned that between rhodey finding him in the desert and them landing back in the states, they stay at the bagram airfield in afghanistan for tony to recover enough and also to undergo all the debriefing and mental/physical health checks that POWs do.

he definitely escaped the cave on his own by making and hiding bombs. story totally checks out and has no holes whatsoever and he is leaving for home now, thank you. :| he's had enough of this place.
